jazz-not-jazz radio show

In conjunction with radio42.com and rautemusik.fm jazz-not-jazz presents two hours of simply great music every Friday 19:00-21:00 UTC+1 (you don’t have to convert it for Germany…that’s Friday 13:00-15:00 in NYC, Friday 10:00-12:00 in San Francisco and Saturday 04:00-06:00 in Sydney). The links of the audio stream can be found on radio42.com or rautemusik.fm (look for #Musik.Lounge there).

This Friday you can listen to some old, now more or less obscure songs and new tracks from albums recently reviewed on jazz-not-jazz or soon to be reviewed like the Soul Movement and H2O Productions.
Just a few words to some songs I haven’t reviewed on this site…Jhelisa offers a very dramatic acoustic version of Death Of A Soul Diva with Carleen Anderson on background vocals…Jhelisa’s new album will hopefully be released this September.
Mr. Alexander had a nice album out in 2000 which sounded a bit like Maxwell with a rough edge.
The Winter In America album by Gil Scott-Heron/Brian Jackson was actually a fulfilled wish from my wishlist (thanks Yiannis!)…and I wonder why I haven’t it bought it myself before.
Nu Soul Habits show us that the term nu soul is actually, er, quite old and in fact just another marketing invention. Unfortunately I haven’t heard anything from Nu Soul Habits (which were the duo of Tonye Hilmon and Eddie Towns Jr) besides their Motown album from 1994.
Kwesi is another artists who seems to have appereared on the scene for only one album. And he was one of the first British artists to be sold as nu/neo soul artist.
While Try My Love by the late Lalomie Washburn sounds a little bit dated today she still delivers a fine vocal performance on a song she wrote with Michael McEvoy.
I’m sure I don’t have to tell you who Jon Lucien is…otherwise have a closer look here.
On the endless lists of where are they now? Davina shouldn’t be missing. Unfortunately I never heard of her again except for a song she had done with Val Watson for her debut Urbal.
The Basement Boys give Ultra Nate’s How Long a great soul-funk feeling with their Philly Cream Mix and of the ten versions available on the 5″ CD-single it’s the one that still sounds the best.

Jhelisa: Death Of A Souldiva (from Galactica Moods EP - Dorado Records 1995)
Naima Shoumburger: You And Me Against The World (from A Blossom Sings - Shambones 2002)
Brigette: Take Me (from Starlite Lounge - Expansion 2005)
Gary Jenkins: One And Only (from The Other Side - Expansion 2005)
Soul Movement: See Me (from Get Away - soulmovementmusic.com 2005)
H2O Productions: I Dare U To Stay ft. Eric Roberson (from While U Wait - H2O Productions 2005)
Mr. Alexander: Mrs. Alexander (from From Friday Night ‘Till Monday Mornin’ - Plutonium Rock 2000)
Gil Scott-Heron/Brian Jackson: Rivers Of My Fathers (from Winter In America - Charly 1973)
Ty Causey: Love’s Messin’ With Me (from Love Notes - Ty Causey 2005)
Nu Soul Habits: Meant To Be (from Meant To Be - Motown 1994)
Tyme: Shorty (from A Matter Of Time - Tyme Entertainment 2005)

This time it’s Down To The Bone Time. With a recent review of DTTB’s new release Spread Love Like Wildfire and an interview with Stuart Wade I think it’s a good idea to dig into my record collection and come up with two hours of music by Stuart Wade. Most of the songs are actually recorded under the DTTB moniker but you will also hear some earlier stuff by the New Jazz Hustlers, Think Twice and songs Stuart co-wrote for the NFL Horns Project. Enjoy!

Think Twice: Waiting For You (DTTB mix) (12″ EMI UK 1994)
NFL Horns Project: 390 West (from Triangle Below Canal Street - Internal Bass 1996)
New Jazz Hustlers: Afro Vibe (from New Jazz City - Internal Bass 2000)
Down To The Bone: My One And All (feat. Hil St. Soul) (from Crazy Vibes And Things - GRP/Verve/Universal 2002)
Down To The Bone: Carlito’s Way (from From Manhattan To Staten 1996)
Down To The Bone: Mystic Samba (from Spread Love Like Wildfire - Narada Jazz 2005)
Down To The Bone: Down In The Basement (from Cellar Funk - Narada Jazz 2004)
Down To The Bone: Vinyl Junkie (feat. Reuben Wilson) (from The Urban Grooves - Internal Bass 1998)
Down To The Bone: Soul Brother No. 1 (from Spread The Word - Internal Bass 2000/2001)
Down To The Bone: Angel Baby (feat. N’Dambi) (from Spread Love Like Wildfire - Narada Jazz 2005)
New Jazz Hustlers: El Loco (from New Jazz City - Internal Bass 2000)
Down To The Bone: The Flow (feat. Flora Purim) (from Cellar Funk - Narada Jazz 2004)
Down To The Bone: Touch Of Voodoo (from From Manhattan To Staten 1996)
NFL Horns: Split Milk (from Triangle Below Canal Street - Internal Bass 1996)
Down To The Bone: Bump’n'Hustle (from The Urban Grooves - Internal Bass 1998)
Down To The Bone: Cooking With Gas (from Crazy Vibes And Things - GRP/Verve/Universal 2002)
Down To The Bone: Downtown Shuffle (from Spread The Word - Internal Bass 2000/2001)
Down To The Bone: To The Bone (from The Urban Grooves - Internal Bass 1998)
Think Twice: Don’t Blame Me (from Joy Is Free - Internal Bass 1996)
New Jazz Hustlers: New Jazz City (from New Jazz City - Internal Bass 2000)
Down To The Bone: Little Smile (from Cellar Funk - Narada Jazz 2004)

cover versions

In conjunction with radio42.com and rautemusik.fm jazz-not-jazz presents two hours of simply great music every Friday 19:00-21:00 UTC+1 (you don’t have to convert it for Germany…that’s Friday 13:00-15:00 in NYC, Friday 10:00-12:00 in San Francisco and Saturday 04:00-06:00 in Sydney). This time it’s all about cover versions and I’ve finally found the time to write a few notes to each song on the playlist. Don’t hestitate to let me know what you think of these cover versions in the comments.

Dianne Reeves: Both Sides Now (from Quiet After The Storm - Blue Note/Capitol)

I must admit that I’ve never ever heard the original version by Joni Mitchell but for me Dianne does a very good and convincing version with George Duke on piano.

Ruth Brown: Always On My Mind (from Have A Good Time - Fantasy Records)

Forget the Elvis version of this tune and also the more than mediocre dance version by the Pet Shop Boys. Ruth Brown’s version of the Willie Nelson hit Always On My Mind beats them all. Recorded live at the Cinegrill, Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in 1988 this version has it all: soul, blues and a heartfelt performance by Ruth, who really has seen and heard it all in her long career spanning over 55 years. Her records for Atlantic Records were so successful that some call Atlantic the house that Ruth build.

Milira: Rocket Love (from Back Again!!! - Motown)

Milira had released two albums on Motown. Milira in 1989 and Back Again!!! in 1992. On the latter appears her version of Stevie Wonder’s Rocket Love, which appeared on his 1980 album Hotter Than July). Produced by Lemel Humes (who also had a few hits in the late 80s/early 90s as writer/producer) this version was actually the one that introduced me to this song. And Milira’s version still sounds a little blusier too me.

Intro: Ribbon In The Sky (from Intro - Atlantic)

This is again a Stevie Wonder song and again this was the first version of this song I’ve heard back in 1993. Stevie’s version was featured on his Original Musiquarium album from 1982. Intro had a minor hit with Love Thang and even got the chance to release a second album on Atlantic. Unfortunately the uptempo stuff sounds a little bit dated but Intro’s ballads like Ribbon In The Sky still sounds good.

BeBe Winans: Jesus Children Of America (ft. Stevie Wonder & Marvin L. Winans) (from Love & Freedom - Atlantic)

Is this really a cover version when Stevie is featured on it? Actually this version sticks closely to the original from the Innervisions album from 1973. Nevertheless it’s a great update of classic Stevie Wonder tune.

Abbey Lincoln & Archie Shepp: Golden Lady (from Painted Lady - ITM Records)

I’m sure you’ve guessed it…another Stevie Wonder cover…another song from the Innervisions album (I guess I will do a Stevie Wonder cover versions show in the future…since he has written such great tunes and many artists have actually recorded some very good versions of his songs). This time we get a jazz version with Abbey on vocals and Archie on saxophone. There’s also a fine version of Golden Lady by Frank McComb but actually I prefer this cover since it gives the song a new direction and meaning. And its epic 9 and a half minutes only adds to its appeal.

Like last week I’ve featured music that has been reviewed previously on jazz-not-jazz except for three songs. The Ricky Dillard track is an almost ancient house record from DJ International, the Jeffrey Darnell song is from a Talkin Loud compilation (unfortunately I’ve never seen a full length album by Jeffrey himself) and Feel The Flow is an old release from the Bottom Line imprint.

Inspired from the Donny Hathaway and the Midnight Band songs from the last show this Friday you’ll hear part I of a three part series called The Struggle For Freedom, Jusitice and Equalitiy. There are some old chestnuts amongst the songs like Stevie’s Living For The City or Joe Smooth’s Promised Land but for me they fit into the context very well. This time I spare you lengthy comments on each song just listen to the lyrics and you’ll know what I mean. So here’s just the playlist:

jazz-not-jazz on webradio

As already mentioned here you’ll soon have the opportunity to listen to some of the records featured on this site. In conjunction with radio42.com and rautemusik.fm jazz-not-jazz presents two hours of simply great music every Friday 19:00-21:00 UTC+1 (you don’t have to convert it for Germany…and it would be Friday 13:00-15:00 in NYC, Friday 10:00-12:00 in San Francisco and Saturday 04:00-06:00 in Sydney). The links for the audio stream can be found on radio42.com or rautemusik.fm (look for #Musik.Lounge there).

And here’s the playlist with a few comments on each song because I’ve decided to do some talking between songs only on special occasions and this time it wasn’t one *grin*.

1. Fay Victor: Zootoon (from Darker Than Blue)

Since I have Fay Victor’s Darker Than Blue album in my collection Zootoon has become one of my all-time favourites (but please don’t ask me about the other thousand songs on this list). Simply a great original jazz by Fay and Jochem van Dijk and Fay’s voice is just impressive.

2. Teena Marie: I’m Gonna Have My Cake (And Eat It Too) (from Wild and Peaceful)

There are only a few ‘white’ singers that have made a lasting impression on me. One of them is Teena Marie. While I was disappointed with her recent La Dona album I still love every single one of her previous albums. From her debut album from 1979 comes this jazz song. One of the rare occasions where we can enjoy Teena on a straight jazz tune (Sunny Skies being the other opportunity).

3. Lois Deloatch: Reflection (from Closure)

An original composition by Lois from her second album and what a fine, timeless jazz tune it is. If you like this tune then you certainly want to check out the album.

4. Joanna Pascale: Give Me The Simple Life (from When Lights Are Low)

Talking about ‘white’ singers who impressed me…here’s another one. Joanna Pascale really knows how to handle a jazz song and has the rare gift to breathe new life into standards and covers like on this update of a Julie London song. Yeah, the best things are the simple ones, that’s why this website is so reduced to the necessary stuff *grin*.

5. Juliet Kelly Alive & Free (from Aphrodite’s Child)

Juliet is another female jazz singer who released a great album made of mainly originals a few years ago that somehow hadn’t the success it deserves. Hopefully this will change with Juliet’s new album that will contain self-written material only.

6. Carmen Lundy: Better Days (from Self Portrait)

Self Portrait was actually my first Carmen Lundy album. And what a revelation it was to hear her for the first time. I’ve soon purchased Good Morning Kiss and Moment To Moment and from then every new record. Unfortunately I’ve never saw a copy of her Night And Day album for CBS/Sony. So anyone who has a copy of it, please contact me! Better Days was written by Carmen herself and is simply excellent and one of the songs that can give you hope when you think nothing’s gonna work out the way you want.
