Interview with Conya Doss

Q: Where are your musical roots and how do you describe your music?

Conya Doss: My musical roots come from my musical family and the variety of music that they have exposed me to, i.e. Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway, Angela Winbush, The Doobie Brothers, Bonnie Raitt, Natalie Cole. I learned so much from them!

Q: What was your motivation to produce and release Just Because on your own? And what was the experience like to be responsible for everything?

Conya Doss: After dealing with all of the nonsense of others guiding my career, I decided to try it on my own, I knew exactly what I wanted. It was a lot more difficulty, which minimized some of my creativity, but in the end, I had total control as to what I which route I wanted to take. I knew everything that was going on with regards to my project. The good, the bad etc...

Q: How did you hook up with your co-producers like Rodney Jones or Myron?

Conya Doss: I have known Myron for quite a while, he's a good friend of mine, he brings out the best iin my vocals! Rodney Jones is an up and coming very talented producer, who met me through another producer Mark Taylor. It was easy working with them because they knew exactly where I was trying to go with my music.

Q: I'm really impressed with the songs Day By Day, Sweet Love and Ain't Given Up, since they don't over-stress the nu soul genre and are more rooted in classic soul music. Do you plan to delve more into songs like these with future releases?

Conya Doss: Yes, I plan to go wherever my heart takes me. Those are among my favorites!

Q: Where would you like to see yourself musically and creatively in a few years?

Conya Doss: I hope that I can continue to provide people with good music and inspiration. If I can reach just one, then I have done good!

Q: Your album Just Because is available for a few months in the US and has just been released by Dome Records in the UK. How satisfied are you with reactions by critics and your fans so far?

Conya Doss: I am very satisfied, I also appreciate the constructive criticism. Dome is very supportive, I couldn't have gone with a better company. My fans and the critics, for the most part, have been very accepting.

Q: Will you visit Europe for live performances to promote your album there?

Conya Doss: Yes, Actually, I will be doing Jazz Cafe March 29th.
